Are you using the right words to talk about what you do?

They say a picture paints a thousand words and yes, great images on your website and in your marketing collateral are important – but NOT as important as the words you use.

Why?

Because it’s the words you use that will make someone want to buy from you. Or not.

It’s what you say about what you do, that will either resonate with your target market. Or not.

It’s how well you talk about what your ideal client wants, and how you can help them get it, that will inspire them to take action.

Or not.

If you sell something (and if you’re a business owner, you do!) you need the right words.

But knowing what words to use, whether talking to someone face-to-face or writing copy for your website, is hard. Especially when it’s your own business. You’re so close to it. It can feel overwhelming – which is why I highly recommend getting someone like me to help you.

But if that’s not an option, here are:

THREE TIPS TO HELP YOU FIND THE RIGHT WORDS TO ATTRACT YOUR DREAM CLIENTS:

1. Listen to your target market

Sounds obvious but it’s really important to capture the exact words they use to describe their problem, how they’re feeling and what solution they’re looking for. It’s no good talking about how you help someone become “fighting fit” or “a confident leader” if they’re just not words your target market would ever use.

2. Avoid the jargon

Avoid words like “customer-centric” and “solution-focused”. They’re like Diet Coke – taste OK but no real substance! Same with promises like “always on budget” and “attention to detail”. They’re not going to differentiate you and, anyway, aren’t those things a given? Forget the jargon and just talk from the heart about what you help your customers do.

3. Start with the problem you solve

When you start with a problem that someone is experiencing, you immediately let them know that this is a story about them. It’s highly relevant. You’re opening a story loop and inviting them in. And now your customer is wondering whether or not you can help them solve that problem. Then you can talk about the solution you offer and the Happy Ever After your customer will experience when they buy from you.
